An update.
It's good to be with you again. After a long thunderstorm delay in at Chicago O'Hare, I landed in San Antonio on Monday the 25th and have spent the week settling into our seven-person volunteer house on the West Side. I want to backtrack a bit before I go into detail about San Antonio, but here are the basics:
- I live in a small house with six other YAVs. The place is surprisingly roomy, and so far we're making it work with meal plans, chore distribution, and really deep talks about our feelings.
- My work placement for the year is at San Anto Cultural Arts, where (as it seems, for the moment) I will be doing assistant administrative work for their myriad projects and programs.
- Along with community living and placement work, there's church collaboration to be done, neighborhood exploration, and figuring out how sign up for CSAs so we have enough food every week. Also, there's ongoing enthusiasm for a house garden and chicken coop. Stay tuned.
What's die Spanierin?
It's German for "the Spanish woman". I don't speak German and I'm not from Spain, but the city of San Antonio has a history of German settlements along with its Hispanic population, which I found interesting. I also studied abroad in Spain once, so. There's that.
Want to support me?
As you may know, YAV has tasked each volunteer with raising $3,000 individually and $3,000 towards the team goal in order to offset the (much larger) costs of the year-long program. If you feel so inspired to support me monetarily (thanks!) you may do so via the YAV official site. I am also accepting support in the form of prayers and nice comments.
That's all for now. See you soon,
Caroline
